THE PROJECT
For this assignment, we were tasked to build a string, wind and percussion instrument to fully understand the concept of waves. By going through the step-by-step, building process, we could experience how sound can be effected by so many different variables, including pitch, frequency, and amplitude. I personally worked on the string instrument that I modeled after a double bass, but in a much higher octave. Together with my three other group members, we managed to form a band with an original song all about sound waves.
REFLECTION
This project seemed to have gone rather fast in terms of time spent on the assignment, as well as how quickly our instruments came along. As a group, we worked very well together. We all were committed and focused on the task at hand, leading to extra time spent working and working on an original song. We also helped one another, working with one another to improve each instrument by just sharing ideas to being an extra set of hands.
However, we did have some problems throughout the process of designing and building. Communication was an issue with our group, simply because a new concept or design plan was not shared. With all the blueprinting and creations of the instruments, we just did not even think about informing the others about our plan before we ran into future problems that were caused by the lack of talking amongst ourselves. We also spent a significant amount of time contemplating the reality of our proposed end goal. Due to how complex our plan for each instrument was, many building days were spent wondering how we could possibly complete this project. Personally, this constant second guessing made the step-by-step thinking necessary to actually construct my string instrument very arduous and left me with a bass not nearly as well made as I would have hoped. In conclusion, I need to allow myself to think logically, but my group was a great help to finally complete this assignment!
